MAMUSKA LEEDS - Programme 09.03.07

Building on the success of the first Mamuska Leeds held in December 2006, Yorkshire Dance held a second evening this month.
Audiences were encouraged to socialise and be inspired by the rich programme of creative activity on offer. They were free to move about, chat and visit the bar throughout the evening.

The programme for this event:

Another Dance Company - Epithet

Immersed in the fictional world of a book. Based on Achmat Dangor's novel 'Bitter Fruit'

The Demon Barbers

English folk powerhouse. The Demon Barbers take an original and imaginative approach to traditional music.

Mik Artistik's Ego Trip

Surreal punk, funk, Catholic, electric comedy.

Ameilius Sense

A collaboration between Community Dance York, choreographer Rita Marcalo (Instant Dissidence), filmmaker Lucy Barker and digital company Bright White.

Menele Project - Test Match

Jumping off your box, challenging the boundaries, and matching the unmatchable - interrupted by a Batsman, who ends it all with one swing of his bat.

Los Galiticos

Hip-op, Breakin, Salsa combo

3 Bass

Drums, Bass and Sax

Natasha Light - Passage Among Shadow

The paper sculpture hung suspened at the window. Cured paper strips are layered and sewn creating an arching wing-like structure. The repeated lines express movement within the piece, while the extending form represents a physiological need for space. Natasha Light is a visula artist based at Patrick Studios.

Jen the Wren - Magic Hands

A tantalising, energising, sensational performance of magic hands. Your hands can feel magic too. This piece involved audience participation.

MAMUSKA NIGHTS - Article

TOKYO BOUND
The Mamuska Nights network goes east

From John's Square to Tokyo!
Originally created by Davide Terlingo for Daghdha Dance Company in 2004, Mamuska Limerick has seen a good few years of truly inspiring programming, presenting to an ever enthusiastic audience a stunning 160 shows with the participation of over 100 individual artists. For the one of us who have seen this innovative platform growing from the friendly days at the Boat Club to the mature days at the Daghdha Space, it is a delight to know that the success of Mamuska Limerick is leading to the development of an international Mamuska Nights network. Mamuska Nights in each city share a common ethos and vision, however these special evenings also maintain a fluidity to respond to local and national context. To this purpose, each city has a different curator with the role of creating a point of reference for the local artists and audience, selecting the works that compile each city programme.
Under Terlingo's directorship, the network started to develop in association with the Yorkshire Dance Centre in Leeds, UK in December 2006 following a visit from their artistic director Bush Hartshorn to Mamuska Limerick. Following its success and in collaboration with Dance and Media Japan director Naoto Iina, the platform will voyage to Asia to premiere Mamuska Tokyo on the 7th of March, 2007. And this is not all! This year will also see the birth of Mamuska Dublin and Mamuska Galway, consolidating Mamuska Nights aims to build a strong national and international network for cultural and artistic exchange.
Keep an eye on Mamuska as its surprises aren't finished yet.

MAMUSKA TOKYO - Coming up!

Mamuska Tokyo is a new exciting Japanese initiation as part of Mamuska Nights, an international network of platforms with a unique flavour and format built around informality and a true sense of artistic experimentation.
These are structured social contexts that challenge established notions of performance and theatrical space. Originally conceived in 2004 by Italian artist and curator Davide TERLINGO for Daghdha Dance Company in Ireland.

Curators in each city have the role of creating a local point of reference and selecting the programme. Mamuska Tokyo is curated by IINA Naoto, director of Dance and Media Japan

MAMUSKA LIMERICK - Article

International aspect to Mamuska's reach

Daghdha Dance Company's Mamuska, the open platform intended to challenge notions of performance and theatrical space, is now international. The objective is to share a common ethos and promoting collaborations and artistic exchange across the sea and indeed, ocean.
With Davide Terlingo of Daghdha at the helm, Mamuska is connecting with artists and organic performance work in Britain and Japan. The first British Mamuska took place in December in the Yorkshire Dance Centre; a Mamuska Tokyo is being organised in collaboration with Dance and Media Japan for March next.
Limerick has already witnessed 4 enjoyable, surprising, creative and sometimes stunning years of local and international artists availing of this public platform.
"Mamuska is an unique occasion to present and view evolving works, raw ideas, minimalist perfections, unrehearsed visions," Terlingo explains. "It's about trial and errors, short masterpieces, playful nonsense, conceptual research, first steps... all in the context of an informal choreographed with the freedom to chat and move around at any time".

See for yourself what the fuss is about at this wildly successful event that spans genres, age groups and the imagination. Doors open for Limerick's first Mamuska in 2007 this Friday 2, John's Square at 8pm. Entrance is free of charge and there's a small bar.
Anyone interested in performing at future Mamuska should first contact Davide Terlingo at John's Square or by email davide [at] daghdha.ie with their idea.
